This residence was designed as a vacation home for three generations of a family who truly enjoys being together. To embellish that feeling, the main living spaces were created where they would all flow in and out of each other. Places where one could be felt and heard, even though not necessarily seen. Set on an ocean front property with a view up and down the coastline of southern Kauai, morning light entertains one by back-lighting waves, creating unexpected scenes of fish and sea turtles. Design challenges included having to raise the home 5′ due to the coastal flood zone, the unchanging maximum height restriction and the owners desire to have a two-story structure. To help diminish the actual vertical distance from the ground to the second level, a lattice work of ipe wood spans between the coral-faced piers.
