Dancing Roofs

Capturing the essence of spatial compositions seen in old-world Japan, was the core concept for this home. Designed for a renowned Japanese family desiring a contemporary Hawaiian retreat, it was inspired by the temples and gardens of Kyoto. The design evokes the feeling of a small town through the interplay of roof and wall geometry. By dividing the house into three smaller, separate pavilions linked by glass bridges, a sense of privacy and contentment was created and augmented by other traditional elements including reflecting ponds and a traditional contemplative tea house.
