An 8 kw Sanyo HIT photovoltaic system has been installed at the Somekh Residence in Makena, Maui, Hawaii. These thin layer cells are hybrids of single crystalline silicon surrounded by ultra-thin amorphous silicon layers. This high efficiency technology by Sanyo has made them a leader in cell and module efficiency (up to 18.8 Watts per sq. foot – 17% module efficiency).

Other “solar applications” include (4) four foot by 8 foot solar hot water panels used to generate hot water for the home and a flex tubing run under the garage drive to preheat the swimming pool water when needed.

The solar photovoltaic and the hot water systems were designed to sit on a sloping garage roof so that their upper surface would be flush with the parapet (see photo).
